“How can I even know you are her? You show up here like some ghost...”
This past year, I have had the chance to delve into David Harrower's shocking play Blackbird as an actor. Una has a relationship with an older man named Ray when she is only twelve years old. Fifteen years later, she pays him a visit at work, only to find that he has rebuilt his life, while she has remained frozen in time and imprisoned by their past relationship. In this project, I chose to explore the tension between these two characters by using images coupled with bird illustrations. This play deals with ambiguity, rather than absolutes, and explores bits of sweetness and reassurance amidst misery. Rather than using bold colors, I decided to make these posters candy-colored, reflective of the play's ambiguity as well as Una's childlike innocence.
“You made me into a ghost. I was talked about, pointed at, stared at.”
“Blackbird singing in the dead of night. Take these broken wings and learn to fly.”
